Freshman?... Want to make a difference?... Join FCLA!

Freshman Campus Leadership Associates (FCLA) is an ASUN group intended to introduce freshmen to student government here at UNL as well as to a network of other promising leaders in their class. After a careful interview process conducted by the Appointments Board, twenty of the University's most promising freshmen leaders are selected to serve for the remainder of their freshman year. This group is an excellent way to learn about the construction and operation of student government at the University, to meet other involved freshmen, to work closely with ASUN senators and executives, to participate in several well-established University traditions, and to prepare for future involvement both at the University and beyond. Associates are required to attend a weekly meeting every Thursday at 4:30pm.

INCOMING AND POTENTIAL STUDENTS: CLICK HERE and check out YearOne, an FCLA side-project, to answer some important college-related questions that you may have. This website has recently been revamped to greatly increase its relevance to students like you!

    Previous FCLA projects have included:

  • The annual Freshman Funniest Story Contest
  • Volunteer work with The Gathering Place, The Salvation Army, and Relay for Life
  • Design, advertisement for, and implementation of YearOne, a website designed to help answer any questions or concerns of incoming students
  • Presentations at UNL's Big Red Road Show
  • Reinstatement, planning, and organization of UNL's Homecoming Parade
  • Operations Staff involvement with The Big Event

In the Fall semester, the newly appointed 2007-2008 FCLAers were able to explore several different aspects of ASUN construction and operation through an "ASUN 101" learning initiative. This was followed by the launching of the brand new ASUN Internship Program, in which each interested FCLAer was paired with an ASUN executive or committee chair to work closely and assist with the issues being tackled by that person. Committees were established within FCLA to handle issues of communication, socialization, and philanthropy. The roles of FCLA Secretary, Historian, and Treasurer were filled following a group vote.

In the Spring semester, FCLA will transform from a strongly Director/Associate Director driven program to a much more Associate driven program. With Big Red Road Show, the YearOne website re-launch, FCLA Bylaw revisions, the Freshman Funniest Story Contest, and even more social and philanthropic events on the near horizon, this semester will provide the 2007-2008 FCLAers with a chance to take charge of and improve some existing FCLA traditions. They will also be able to try their hand at the conception, design, advertising for, and execution of new projects.
