Laura Cockson Memorial Scholarship
Each recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship.
This award recognizes the efforts of student(s) who have promoted healthy decision-making and responsibility in regard to alcohol use among students. Recipients will demonstrate responsibility in their lives and lead by example.
Named in honor of Laura Marie Cockson, a Nebraska student leader who died when a driver under the influence of alcohol struck the car in which Laura was riding.

About the Application
As part of the process, applicants will:
- provide basic contact and academic information;
- consent to a Grade Release Agreement;
- consent to a review of any violations to the Student Code of Conduct;
- compose responses to these four essay questions:
- How does your values system demonstrate your focus on academics and promoting a responsible and safe collegiate experience?
- How has alcohol personally affected your life? Please explain.
- What personal choices are you making today that accurately reflect your character?
- Expand upon your experience in promoting alcohol awareness on campus.
- How does your values system demonstrate your focus on academics and promoting a responsible and safe collegiate experience?
Who can apply
Full-time UNL undergraduate and graduate students who will be enrolled for the Fall 2026 semester.

- Jan 12, 2026 | Application opens at 8 a.m.
- Feb 22, 2026 | Application closes at 11:59 p.m.
- Mar 6, 2026 | Award recipients and applicants will be notified after this date.
